Chapter 15

They landed on hard rock. Relieved, Daniel let go of Calliope, but she still held on to him, knowing that something wasn’t right. They had found solid ground too soon. That could only mean that the rest of the tunnel was destroyed. For the first time, Calliope was at a loss. This tunnel had been her home for so long, and now that it was demolished, she had no idea how to navigate through it. They couldn't continue traveling. Who knew in what era they were stuck now?

Daniel, perturbed by the harpy’s silence, decided to stay close to her, just in case. She seemed unsure. Even though he could not see her face in the darkness, he was able to pick up some of the energy that flowed between them.

Energy, wait a second, that just sounded weird, didn’t it? Yet, at the same time, he liked feeling a connection between them.

“We must go deeper,” she finally said.

“Deeper?”

“Yes, this rock is an obstruction. We are not at the end of our destination.”

If this was a time tunnel, he realized that it was not a question of where they were stuck but when. They could be in any century. His thoughts, ready to believe it now, whirled in his head, calculating the length of their drop by the minutes it had taken them to get here. How much had it been? Around six minutes, perhaps? He had not exactly been counting, but he was good at guessing time. It was something Darryn had always found annoying about him, but he supposed that that skill could come in handy now.

“Then, where are we?” he asked.

“I’m not sure,” she replied, finally letting go of him and touching the wall with her claws, attempting to get a feel for their location. She had traveled up and down this shaft for centuries, she knew its layout inside out. Perhaps she could discern something from the wall. She hoped that she would recognize its texture which could lead her to make a calculated guess in what era they found themselves in.

“Our fall lasted around six minutes,” he said, hoping that the information might help.

“Six? It seemed longer to me. Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

Her nails scraped the rock surface, but she recognized nothing, neither by the scratching sound or its texture. Perhaps it had been affected by the explosion. She took a few steps to the left and stepped on a few loose pebbles.

Six minutes … Could this be the early 1900s? She touched her right ear to the wall, hoping to pick up some sounds from the year they found themselves in, but she heard nothing.

When the silence lasted too long, Daniel asked, “Any ideas?”

“I think we might by close to 1914 or 1920, but I can’t be sure.”

“It better be 1920. It won’t help us getting stuck in World War I.”

“1920 won’t be of much use either,” she snarled. “We must go to 1708.”

“Are you sure it’s exactly 1708? Not 1709 or 7? How do you
